The existence of an open source version was surely a big part of the success, but so was the existence of a commercial option.
- montywi 10y agoNot that MySQL was created before Open Source was coined. MySQL was hugely popular (several millions of users) way before it was GPL. David and I always planned to make MySQL Free Software, but we needed first to get enough momentum to be able to afford it. We also needed to come up with a business model that would work with GPL. MySQL was the first software that was using Dual Licensing on GPl.
