I think it's hard to say that Trolls are ruining the internet. They have been a part of the internet since the first BBS.
Sensitivity to them is what's causing this current push back (and emboldening them). I'm not defending them as some of them go way out of line, but I feel like language policing is a large step in the wrong direction.
- orcdork 10y agoYes, obviously it's everyone else that's at fault, not the vocal toxic minority.
- Cuuugi 10y agoI'm not really blaming anyone (or intending to). All i am saying is that there should be a logical disconnect between someone calling someone an asshole on a forum, and someone Doxxing a 14 year old girl because she made the mistake of showing her boobs on the internet. "Trolling" means different things to different people(just as what people find offensive), and legislating that is dangerous IMO.
- dang 10y agoPlease don't respond with deliberately uncharitable interpretations. It's not plausible that Cuuugi meant it that way.
- beat 10y agoI think it's gotten worse. It's one thing for some dude to argue anonymously. It's another thing to make credible death threats and such. My daughter wrote a paper about Gamergate and the crap around that, and she was afraid to publish it widely for fear of retaliation. A bandmate wrote a fantastic song about trolls hating on women in gaming, and we only play it live because she's afraid of what will happen if we release a recording. It's scary. Women are justifiably afraid of what will happen to them if they publicly criticize the trolls.
- Cuuugi 10y ago>I think it's gotten worse. I do somewhat agree, but i feel like that's more a statement about mental patients with a modem than the average level of toxicity. Gamergate is a topic i want to avoid, because it could go on for days, but i will say this. Only a woman could publish a piece of shit game, and get so much great press "seemingly" by sleeping with a bunch of gaming journalists. Only a Man would get so butthurt and release details of the former. Can't we agree that they are both shitty people?
- beat 10y agoAs my daughter observed, this was basically just standard toxic-relationship breakup crap gone viral. But whatever she might have done, even if she's guilty of everything she was accused of by her boyfriend who wrote a 10,000 word rant about her (seems unlikely), none of the stuff done by the gamergate trolls was justified. None of it. edit: And if the girlfriend had written a 10,000 word rant about her boyfriend, the trolls would have attacked the girlfriend. That's how sexism works.
- Cuuugi 10y agoI think it's hard to say that it was a "standard" toxic relationship, when she slept with people to further her product/career. That's not really an option for men. That's how sexism also works.
- beat 10y agoIt's absolutely an option for men. You just need to be willing to sleep with men, because men are in power, generally.
- Cuuugi 10y agoI'm going to go out on a limb (speak out of my butt) and say there are probably more female managers/executives than there are homosexual managers/executives.
- madspindel 10y ago> They have been a part of the internet since the first BBS. Yes, they have. But ordinary people have not. And I believe this is the biggest problem. The trolls have been setting the tone of a Internet that most people don't want. I want a Internet without harassment and harsh/trololol comments. We need to fight back against the trolls.
- Aldo_MX 10y agoThe rule of thumb is "don't feed the troll", many communities have tools to block a problematic person.
