- tdb7893 10y agoI don't think that trolls are something that comes up often in real life. I can't imagine people acting like that in person unless they were middle schoolers. For example when I played soccer with people in real life I never had people tell me that I suck and to kill myself but people do it all the time in some video games.
- Aelinsaar 10y agoI would argue that the 2016 race has been characterized primarily, by trolling.
- alayne 10y agoThe barrier to entry for online harassment is so much lower that I don't consider them comparable.
- Aelinsaar 10y agoBy the same token, the ability to silence it is far greater. When someone is ranting about the world ending outside of your business, you might have to call the cops. Online, you just hit "ignore".
- DanBC 10y ago> Online, you just hit "ignore". You've clearly never been the target of even a minor troll campaign. Hundreds of accounts each send hundreds of messages an hour across a wide range of social media and email accounts. If they can get your real world details they'll use those too. If they get your workplace details they'll use that to harass your employer.
- Aelinsaar 10y agoPeople have tried, but I've always been "paranoid" about keeping my online and offline social lives separated; it was clear a long time ago that "living open" was absolutely insane.
- LukeB_UK 10y agoWhen was the last time you had a load of people tell you to kill yourself in person?
- mdpopescu 10y agoWhen was the last time someone stole your lunch money and pushed you in a locker online?

- tpeo 10y agoI'd say it's very improbable to starve trolls by not giving them attention. So long as the community is receiving new members and the new members aren't acquainted with it all works, there will always be someone there to feed the troll. Think of it as a corollary to the Eternal September. That being said, I think there are people post garbage regardless whether they're given attention or not. Kinda like the people who carve dicks and swastikas at bathroom stalls.
