Have a 20-30min scripted phone conversation. Lead with an overview of the company, description of the position, and responsibilities. I do this first because I've had candidates bail out when they learned the details, so don't waste time interviewing people who don't want the job. Then, ask a few technical questions. I typically start with really easy ones. "Tell me the difference between the public, protected, and private keywords." A surprisingly high percentage of candidates will not be able to explain the difference clearly. If people can confidently go through my canned list of technical questions, then I'll bring them in for a group interview with the team they'll be working with.
- a-saleh 10y agoThanks, seen the suggestions for creating a canonical script already, but like the suggestion of 1. describing the position early to not "waste time interviewing people who don't want the job." 2. ask a few trivial and easy questions first Thanks!
