Of course, it's start being less basic with all the macros and all the tools needed to compile and distribute a C program , like autoconf ... with all these layers , C becomes as complicated as any other language because it relies on so many 3rd party tools (which are often dynamic languages) to fix its shortcomings. But as long as linux kernel is written in C the language isn't going anywhere.
