I never got the Slack hype...
- herbst 10y agoBefore slack i used third party platforms to send me notifications to MSN, later Skype then some strange chat app i don't exactly remember. Now i can simply use the webhook with a simple post request to send notifications to a central place where i can consume them as i need/want to. I used IRC for while but thats drains to much battery on a smartphone, i also tried XMPP but, while its awesome for what it is, it is a pain to manage and setup, especially just for passing messages, mostly one way. The are several nice reasons to use or not use slack, but this is my personal reason why i have a slack all for myself.
- k__ 10y agoProblem is, 99% of it is crap. Slack is okay and there are some really good bots for it. But everyone jumps on that train and so for every good integration there are 20 bad ones, that spam your channel with stuff no one needs to know :\ Takes a bit time to find the good things.
- herbst 10y agoMost of my integrations (except github) are manually crafted. I agree that most bots are just spamming shitholes. Especially the new generation of bots that randomly reminds you to vote for them on some stupid bot stores.
- enraged_camel 10y agoI made a bot that listens for a "coffee on" message and turns on the coffee maker at the office (using an Arduino that's hooked up to it). That way, I can Slack it when I'm leaving the house in the morning and have fresh coffee available when I arrive. :P The only requirement is to remember to prepare the coffee machine the day before, but that hasn't been a problem so far.
