Question: Does 37signals buy traffic/Adwords? Has that ever been part of the use acquisition strategy?

I can (kind of) answer that question, with one Google search for "Basecamp" Collaborate With Basecamp The Original w/ Over 3,000,000 Users. Free Trial 30-Second Signup. www.basecamphq.com

True, but 37signals also offers an affiliate program, so it's possible that ad was created by an affiliate member. I don't have a link handy, but I remember when they reported early results of the affiliate program they specifically mentioned people finding success with search engine marketing.

We experiment with adwords from time to time, but most of the ads you'll see are run by affiliates. In general Adwords has never paid off for us.
