I was under the impression that a dialect becomes a language when it has its own set of "official" rules and not those of the "parent" language.

- patcallier 10y agoStandardization is generally distinct from whether something counts as a language or not. English lacked standardization for centuries (almost a millennium if you count it right) after it became a distinct language.
