Regarding the long URL issue, since IRC can be easily customised, wouldn't it be possible to create a filter that, for each message, would send the URLs to a URL shortener service and display the result? It could even be a self-hosted service to make sure the URLs remain private.
- kzisme 10y agoYeah this can easily be accomplished with a bot (and is fairly common practice)
- lorenzhs 10y agoThere are WeeChat scripts that do exactly that (I think urlserver.py is the recommended one, but don't take my word for it). But version 1.0 (iirc) added bare display mode, which does away with the fancy decorations temporarily. This helps the terminal emulator realise that it's a multi-line URL and let you click it. See http://dev.weechat.org/post/2014/02/16/Bare-display http://dev.weechat.org/post/2014/02/16/Bare-display
- TeMPOraL 10y agoOf course it's easy to do that in a client. Also, on many channels there are bots doing that - every time someone posts a URL, a bot will reply with a shortened version of it.
- lorenzhs 10y agoA bot creates noise for everybody - I think it's nicer to have the client handle this (urlserver.py / bare display in WeeChat, or a non-terminal client). But that creates friction for new users so maybe it's not the holy grail either.
