XMPP and WebSockets are complementary, not mutually exclusive.
- SamWhited 10y agoIndeed, these are two different layers of protocols. Websockets is a transport which can carry XMPP if you can't create a normal TCP connection for some reason (eg. browsers); see also RFC 7395: An Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) Subprotocol for WebSocket (https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc7395 https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc7395)
