Ask HN: How can I get true information about snowfall for skiing?

It seems incredibly hard to get real information about actual snowfall. I'm interested in historical averages over very recent years i.e. how much snow was there in 2012 2013 2014 2015. It seems that solid data is hard to find because the ski resorts don't want it known when there is not much snow. Is there any way to get really trustworthy snowfall information for common skiing locations?
