WeChat is the old AOL/Compuserve concept on mobile, nothing more, nothing less. An abstraction layer on the Internet, needed for China due to the langauge barrier of the Western/English-language Internet/WWW. Most of the stuff the West uses on the Internet is utterly useless for Chinese (also due to blockage by the Great Firewall), hence a walled garden makes perfect sense.
