I seem to only notice this when I read recent books. I suspect only reading old books gives you a filter that gets rid of that kind of thing. The worst habit is when writers just start listing examples of stuff, beyond what is required to make their overall point, as if by adding lots of unnecessary evidence will make their point stronger.
