So when you're doing an initial phone interview and they say "So what is your current salary, and what are you looking for ?" What are you supposed to say ? J

So when you're doing an initial phone interview and they say "So what is your current salary, and what are you looking for ?" What are you supposed to say ? Just stay quiet ? Mutter something about not being able to tell them ? I'm all for negotiation, but it seems that every situation I find myself in, doesn't really lend itself to the described pattern.

My line is always "salary is something I'd discuss in a face-to-face interview". If they push just apologise and say you're not comfortable discussing your salary over the phone.
