The Nexus One (and Droid) are high enough resolution that I wonder if they benefit from any subpixel tricks. I definitely don't see any major kerning problems on my Nexus One.
With hinting on (including the patented/smart auto-hinting) in X (not OS X!) spacing issues are pretty obvious, but it at least keeps fonts reasonably crisp on my normal desktop LCDs, which have a much lower DPI than Nexus One/Droid (and iPhone/iPad too)
