Looks like the DOE is a form of Bragg Grating similar to a FBG (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiber_Bragg_grating https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiber_Bragg_grating) but in a planar form. Still trying to get my head around how it works...
