Chelsea Manning faces charges, solitary confinement after suicide attempt
- Iv 10y agoUnfortunately I don't see either candidate pardonning her. And that means at the very least 4 more years in jail.
- em3rgent0rdr 10y agoGary Johnson (Libertarian) and Jill Stein (Green) support pardoning.
- Iv 10y agoYeah, good luck with that.
- SixSigma 10y agoPoor Chelsea, the forgotten whistleblower - it's all Assange and Snowden.
- stonogo 10y agoSnowden is the only responsible one of the lot. Assange is an attention addict and Manning's leak was essentially a slow-burn temper tantrum. I don't like the way their respective governments are treating any of them, however.
- norea-armozel 10y agoI think the Snowden point is even made more true since he recently said that Wikileaks should've curated the recent leaks better (removing identifying information and the like of civilians especially in the AKP emails). Of course, Wikileaks shot back a tweet about Snowden trying to get a "pardon" from Hillary. God, it's just sad.
- Iv 10y agoSnowden did it after the others. And also, contrary to Assange, he knew exactly the charges that would be pressed against him. Assange, legally, just did journalism. Personally I would argue that Snowden is the one that taught us nothing, apart the name of the programs we knew existed. Hearing that Assange is an attention addict is really sad: he knows that without attention he will die or stay in his diplomatic prison forever. It is a bit hard to call an attention addict someone who would die if he fell out of the radars.
- Kocrachon 10y agoWhat whistleblows were there really? My problem with Chelsea was leaking a bunch of operational details which is not beneficial to most of us. The reasoning for leaking was being mad and fussy. Assange is also more of a show pony trying to be relevant. Yeah, Wikileaks does some amazing work, but I really don't think its about him as much as he acts. Snowden on the other hand, did the right thing. I disagree with him fleeing to China/Russia, but finding a friendly country that wont extradite you is hard.
- SixSigma 10y agoI'm sure most people are familiar with the Baghdad airstrike video "Collateral Murder" and that it was a significant eye openener of considerable public interest. [1] The exposure to the world of Guantanamo Bay was of no benefit ? [2] There are plenty of people who might suggest that The Tunisian revolution and Arab Spring [3] improved for world for the better. I think these are more than "a bunch of operational details" [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/July_12,_2007_Baghdad_airstrike https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/July_12,_2007_Baghdad_airstrik... - kafkaesq 10y agoMy problem with Chelsea was leaking a bunch of operational details which is not beneficial to most of us. My take is that the (vastly) more important issue is whether those actions mean she should be subjected to torture, in the form of her sentence to solitary confinement (and all the humiliations she has endured as a result). Which, being a civilized nation as we are, of course they don't. The only recourse at this point is to offer her not just an (immediate) pardon -- but a formal apology, and a hefty compensation for the ordeal to which she has been subjected in our names. Along with a firm promise never to do such ghastly things to our citizens ever again.
- interchode 10y agoFor a while I really wondered about the whole gender dysphoria aspect of the Manning story. At first it sounded like a smear campaign, to discredit and rob Manning of any admiration among squares. I guess it's legit, but what do I know, except what I read on the internet?
- em3rgent0rdr 10y agoSuicide falls under destruction of government property.
