I've spent a bit of time looking at this code. It's not really that bad, though if might be a bit of a surprise to find it if you weren't expecting it. The most serious problem with it I had is that there's something wrong with the makefile dependency checking. For certain types of change you have to do a full rebuild. But I'm pretty certain autotools is scarier than any memory dump, so I just put up with this.
