When a project is brand new it's definitely play time, but as it grows, matures, and more and more issues are opened up it can start to become work. It can get pretty difficult to maintain a healthy "work/life" balance as well when you have a full time job and now a new part-time, unpaid night "job" as the demand for features and bug fixes is 24/7. It can also be hard to say "no" frequently to well intentioned but off-target pull requests. I've received a few really nasty bug reports, one of which emailed me while I was out to dinner at my wife: definitely wrecked the evening. It is rewarding, but it can definitely get hard. This is a picture of my own inbox from earlier in the year.

I literally get emails every day for issues and my projects are much smaller than the amazing moment.js. If you're not equipped mentally and emotionally to deal with the literally endless barrage of issues it gets pretty easy to feel overwhelmed.
