I was so clueless in terms of what kind of salary I should expect when I started looking--like, at 65% of what ended up seeming reasonable. The calculator is basically a window into the prospective-employee calculus a company is doing. You can also invert things, and use whatever someone offers you to think about what level of skill they may think you have (from SO's perspective).
