They stumbled into an entrenched market position, and now the want to give away some of that to employees.
Wasteful. Most companies reinvest that money into the future growth of the firm, and run their business like a business.
- venning 10y agoI imagine Basecamp would consider their employees to be the future of their business, so these benefits are reinvestments.
- Androider 10y agoWhen you don't take VC money, you're free to run your company as you like. Basecamp sounds like an awesome place to work for both Jason and his employees.
- maxxxxx 10y agoA lot of companies keep that money in an offshore bank account and don't invest it. A "business" doesn't mean that employees can't participate in the success of the business.
- AH4oFVbPT4f8 10y agoThey are reinvesting it, just not in a traditional way. Reading a benefits package such as this gets people like me to consider working at Basecamp, so they end up getting good employees who want to work hard as they know the company is taking care of them.
- jpeg_hero 10y ago> who want to work hard at 32 hours a week?!
- st3v3r 10y agoYes. They work hard during that time, instead of faffing about. Working hard doesn't have to mean you spend all your time at work. In fact, if you're not the owner of the company, that's a terrible thing to do.
- maxxxxx 10y ago32 hours of actual work is a lot. Of the people who "work" 60 hours a week I bet a lot of them work only 32 hours or less and do something else for the other 28 hours. With meetings and stuff I am happy if I get 20 hours of work in.
