Blaming a whole group of very disparate people for one's own flaws is poor reasoning at best. The parallel to racism is ridiculous here.

- yummyfajitas 17y agoI'm not blaming the whole group of women. I'm blaming the intolerant women for being turned away by their own distaste for geeks, which is what dkarl was hypothesizing. "I may have personally turned a few women away from technical fields by being the shining, shambling, pimply...face of math and science at my school." Similarly, I don't blame all whites if a few of them avoid computing in a effort not to talk to minorities, just the intolerant ones. And in my opinion, we are better off without them.
- dgabriel 17y agoYou missed "poorly-dressed, sex-obsessed, socially blunderous". If I choose to avoid people like that, it does not make me equivalent to a racist. It doesn't even make me intolerant. But perhaps you enjoy spending time surrounded by unattractive people who awkwardly hit on you? In any case, I believe dkarl was trying to be funny, and you've twisted that into something fairly ugly.
- yummyfajitas 17y agoI don't like gay men who exhibit certain personality traits (behaving effeminately is socially blunderous under some circumstances), make clothing choices I wouldn't make, and occasionally hit on me. That does make me intolerant, and an effeminate gay fashion designer should not feel guilty for possibly driving me out of the fashion industry. Similarly, a woman is free to be intolerant of geeks, but no geek should feel guilty for driving her out of computing. Her avoidance of computing is caused by her own intolerance, nothing more.
- _delirium 17y agoI think he was trying to be funny also, but I've seen some articles more or less blaming "goddamn aspies" for women's aversion to CS, which seems to be getting pretty close to some variety of bigotry. Of course, it's not clear if the bigotry is coming from women actually avoiding CS for such reasons, or just from people writing such articles.
