You can also battle to control gyms, but the rewards are pitiful and the combat system / pokemon types are so poorly implemented that it's basically a waste of time. Where I live, all the gyms change teams every minute or so. So you collect pokemon, level up, and pray that Niantic will add some better features soon (trading, PvP, ladder system, more rewards for gyms, etc.). But there's no indication that they'll do so...
