We all know that empires fall, therefore, it might be that maybe at that time the UK didn't expect Saudi Arabia to become so powerful as it is nowadays. It's like playing monopoly: you help X to destroy Y, which you don't like, but then X becomes so powerful that it starts to be a pain in the ass.
