Ask HN: Troubleshooting slow Wifi?

A friend of mine approached me with his Wifi troubles ("you're a tech guy right?"). I would love to help, but apart from changing Wifi channels, identifying bottlenecks using e.g. "traceroute" or Wireshark, I don't really know how to proceed. Thanks for your help.
