The performance could be increased (i.e less choppy) and filesizes could be decreased (i.e taking up less transfer of data for the same quality) by filming webm or similar rather than gif. The only disadvantage visible is Internet Explorer users who don't have the plugin installed, in which case you could provide a gif fallback.

Changing the desktop background to a solid color would help too.

    It would make the initial frame smaller, but the difference on following frames should be negligible yes.

MS Edge supports WebM, and that's basically the current version of Internet Explorer.

It would also be more efficient to be able to tell when the gif started
