Blow out any dust from the fans, either by simply blowing into the air vents (output vents, of course, you want to blow the dust out through the input vents), using a compressor to do the same (at a reasonable pressure, you want to clean it, not air-cut it nor use the fans as generators) or a can of compressed 'air'. This has restored many a sluggy laptop to working order here. If OSX is not your thing you might want to consider installing something else on the thing, some Linux of choice or Windows if you so prefer. Otherwise just get an old Thinkpad, they work and keep on working - typing this on a T42p, 12 years and counting...
