It's hardly "bullshit" that the reference to Trump's speech doesn't go down a rabbit hole teasing out the question "did he say ALL Mexicans are rapists, ALL Mexicans coming to the US are rapists, or only MANY of the Mexicans coming to the US are rapists", because in the interest of good journalism we need to know exactly what completely wrong, racist thing this guy was saying (in the multiple cases where he said some variation of it).
BTW in the initial quote he says "They're" several times in a row, and then the last case "They're/their" rapists would either have to be a very odd piece of rhetoric, or most likely another "they're", in which case he actually, literally, did say "they're (all the people Mexico is "sending" us are) rapists".
I don't think this article meets the standards of the New Yorker -- it's really more of a People magazine article. I guess they had the exclusive, and they hate Trump so, whatever.
But complaining that the article doesn't parse out the exact and/or intended "meaning" of Trump's statements (which are well-known) is stretching it.
- gallonofmilk 10y agoto be fair, when you say "(which are well known)", you are just repeating the liberal/left/media/anti-Donald perspective that he's a racist and he thinks all Mexicans are rapists etc. The rest of the population understands that isn't the case.
