Starcraft Html5 project revived on GitHub without all copyrighted materials
- roschdal 10y agoAs a HTML5-developer, how can I best contribute to this Stracraft project? I would recommend changing the project name from Starcraft-Js to something else, to prevent legal problems with the commercial version. I hope this HTML5 game will be as great as https://play.freeciv.org https://play.freeciv.org one day
- tracker1 10y agoAs for contribution, would grab/adapt artwork from open gaming projects, and apply them as necessary to get this actual game working.
- Vervious 10y agoThe link to play seems to be down :(
- tudelo 10y agoI was thinking about a game like starcraft in the browser... I wonder how hard it would be to make the game (or any game of this style) feel smooth and be an html5 game.. Does anyone have any examples of a html5 rts that is good?

- Can_Not 10y agoAre you thinking 1v1..4v4 or 20..2000+ concurrent players per map? I think this is very achievable with 2D graphics, but the market is dominated by games that are extremely simplified and encourage co-op, so straight up RTS would be awesome.
- tudelo 10y ago1v1 as a main focus. with 2v2+ and FFA optional fun modes.
- IsmaOlvey 10y agoLittlewargame is decent: http://www.littlewargame.com/play/ http://www.littlewargame.com/play/
- intruder 10y agoThis is not quite what you're asking, but some guys are working on making SC/BW more accessible, modern (matchmaking, better chat support): https://www.shieldbattery.net/splash https://www.shieldbattery.net/splash
- blahi 10y agoDay9 got hired for a company that was working on this. Duno what happened.
- arkem 10y agoArtillery is in testing at the moment and has landed a publishing deal with Tencent (along with an investment): http://blog.artillery.com/ http://blog.artillery.com/
- NTripleOne 10y agoThis is super neat, I hope to see more stuff ported to HTML5 in the future.
- zamalek 10y agoTechnically true, but that name is still trademarked. Considering that this ultimately affects Blizzard's bottom line, I can't see them being nice about this.
- scotty79 10y ago> Considering that this ultimately affects Blizzard's bottom line How exactly?
- zamalek 10y agoFirstly, non-enforcement of trademarks results in losing said trademarks. I've been downvoted more than once around here for saying that, so here's a citation[1]: > Trademark rights may also be lost when a trademark owner fails effectively to police its mark against eroded distinctiveness, which may occur as a result of the presence of confusingly similar third-party marks in the market. Secondly, why pay for Starcraft when I can just play Starcraft-JS for free? Although I'm completely on-board with Startcraft-JS, I strongly doubt that Blizzard will react well to it. [1]: http://www.inta.org/TrademarkBasics/FactSheets/Pages/LossofTrademarkRightsFactSheet.aspx http://www.inta.org/TrademarkBasics/FactSheets/Pages/LossofT...
- Nullabillity 10y ago> Secondly, why pay for Starcraft when I can just play Starcraft-JS for free? Well, presumably (some of) that money goes somewhere else than Kotick's pockets. If they can't compete properly then isn't that the market working as intended?
- zamalek 10y agoIt doesn't matter how the market should behave (I agree with you about free competition), the reality is that Blizzard owns the trademark and there are legal processes surrounding that. They can compete, just not with the same trademarked name or, as previously, copyrighted materials. I'm not referring to how things should work, rather how they actually work.
- degenerate 10y ago"Extract original resources from starcraft and add into bgm&img folder" Can this be elaborated a bit? I grabbed an MPQ Editor but none of the 'original' files in the MPQ match names referenced in the JS files. For example, Buildings.js references bgm/ProtossBuilding.selected.wav but the sound file in the MPQ is just a string of letters; I'd have to rename each audio file myself...
- gloomyson 10y agoI've made many changes on the raw resources, it seems a mission impossible for you to make all the resources needed to play, unless you kept those resource files I released last year
- akst 10y agolooks like it's in a unplayable state though... Following the instructions in the read me results in the game failing to load, due to most of the resources being deleted...
- gloomyson 10y agoThanks guys, if you find there's still copyrighted files remaining, please tell me to delete it.
- snvzz 10y agoDejavu? No, there was Freecraft, now Stratagus: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stratagus https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stratagus
- tonmoy 10y agoGameRule/Cheat.js was an interesting read
- themihai 10y agoThe demo link doesn't work
- gloomyson 10y agoSorry, now the website load seems too heavy for my web server
- lunchTime42 10y agoMay i use this chance to promote some free alternatives to Still-cloned-Star-Craft: http://www.istrolid.com/game.html http://www.istrolid.com/game.html
- whamlastxmas 10y agoDisappointed, thought headline meant they replaced all the copyrighted art assets with fan-made open source ones. Won't run without original assets from SC install.
