Not exactly on topic but I wanted to ask:
I have never learnt how to play a musical instrument (sadly) but I would like to dabble in computer generated music and music theory. What's the best way to get started with this?
- ZenoArrow 10y agoIf you want to dabble in computer generated music, I'd suggest Sonic Pi is a good place to start, especially if you're comfortable with coding. http://sonic-pi.net/ http://sonic-pi.net/ You may also be interested in Syntorial, which is a synthesizer design course, teaching you how to design synthesizer sounds: http://www.syntorial.com/ http://www.syntorial.com/ Music theory is a huge field. I'd say the circle of fifths is a good starting point into exploring music theory. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circle_of_fifths https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circle_of_fifths https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=d1aJ6HixSe0 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=d1aJ6HixSe0
- dahart 10y agoI've played with SuperCollider a bit and enjoyed it. It's an audio programming language, at the low level of construct and compose your own waveforms. Higher level, less technical, many of my pro audio friends have recommended Ableton. Learn a musical instrument! It's never too late, you'll enjoy it, and it will definitely complement dabbling in computer generated music.
