I think this is a very insightful article, but I agree with you. I thought the first listing was very clear and immediately comprehensible. Granted, I do have a small amount of experience with Haskell so I didn't have to think about the syntax at all or about `cycle`, etc. Listing 4 was harder for me to understand. In particular, I had to actually look up `foldl1`. Once I understood it, though, I could see the beauty of its generality. I'd say it took me twice as long to understand listing 4 fully compared to listing 1.
