There is no JIT-compiler on Dalvik, and its garbage collector is a very slow mark-sweep. Both are known deficiencies being addressed by the Android team. I've been working with SISC Scheme on Android, where it is truly slow. At the moment it is little more than a toy, a Schemely palmtop calculator.
