They left out home ownership. People own large houses, full of crap, with large mortgages, and since sellers must compete with new inventory, they have to stage their house, usually while living in them. With painting, upgrading materials and flooring, you can easily be looking at having to put $10K - $15K into a home to get top dollar back out. It's a daunting prospect, if you're working, have kids, and especially if you've done it once before.

- weaksauce 10y agoThe first time you do it you probably underestimate the actual amount of work it is. Second time you are probably weary from past experience.
- alatkins 10y agoI've relocated overseas before (and returned). Never again, now I know the impact to health and finances.
- yardie 10y agoFirst time you don't underestimate, you simply don't have a choice. Our first place that we bought we had a budget. The banks approved us for a loan based on our income. And even with that we were looking for fixer uppers in specific areas because that is all we could afford. Now we are older, have a bit of equity, more liquidity, and overall more savvy. A fixer-upper is no longer in the cards. But it was an experience.
- Merad 10y agoIt's practically impossible to have a pleasant moving experience. Even in college when you don't really have any possessions except a bed, sofa and some clothes it's unpleasant. As you gain possessions (and family members) it only gets exponentially worse. My last relocation was from a 1BR apartment to a house ~100 miles away. Even with a moving company doing most of the packing and heavy lifting, it was still a week long exhausting process to get moved and probably a month after that before everything was really unpacked and semi orderly. I really dread next time.
