Beats manually polling apps yourself to see if there's anything new in each.

  Not so sure, half of the apps that notify me I would have never polled them (maps, dictionaries, studying apps). The other half are muted so I can poll them when I'm not in the middle of a focused task as that would break my concentration and I'd need a while to regain it. The only two I keep active and not blocked are slack and Inbox, both having low traffic for me, because I use them for important work-related stuff.
