- nickff 10y agoCablecard has been eliminated as a requirement by "Satellite Television Extension and Localism Act Reauthorization" (STELAR). It was eliminated because it had failed to increase competition in the set top box market, while increasing cost and energy consumption.
- rhino369 10y agoAh makes sense. I know Verizon still supported it last year. Do you know if cable companies are ending their support?
- nickff 10y agoI think they are going to wait to see how this rule pans out before deploying their next generation of set-top boxes, which are unlikely to contain cable cards.
- douche 10y agoI'll be a little irked if I have to stop using my HD Homerun tuner and go back to the atrocious Comcast set-top boxes.
- __david__ 10y agoWell that's sad. The day my TiVo stops working is the day I cut the cord.
- AstroJetson 10y agoComcast did a deal with Tivo to give them the interface that my Tivo uses. I have a multicard, 4 channels at once of recording without the settop box. My HDMI TV has multiple inputs for DVD/Bluray players, RaspPi with playback or whatever device I want. So other than the On-demand stuff it's all doable with today's technology. They just don't want to make changes to their billing system to track it. Which is pretty surprising since they have a really nice service architecture bus in production that makes it easy to make these kinds of changes
