Did that actually bear out in which companies went on to be successful? It's an appealing notion, but I question it every time I run across a successful company that can't get it right.

I would expect that rule to be more reliable for startups than for large companies that can survive on mediocrity.

  Yes, by competitors, I meant other startups building ecommerce software, not sites like Walmart. IIRC it worked well.
