UKIP by virtue of it's successful campaign to take the UK out of the EU has lost it's raison d'être. The UK will be (more) independent (of the EU) once the people's will is implemented, so mission accomplished. I don't doubt there exists calculation and bargaining behind the scenes, but really there was nowhere to go as the leader of UKIP and a resignation was inevitable, not really surprising apart from timing.
