Show HN: Octohunt – Find Developers on GitHub
- netgusto 10y agoThis is really nice. I was able to find fellow developers here in my town I didn't knew about (and it's a small town).
- nstart 10y agoI couldn't find my account and now I'm feeling pretty down. "Am I not worthy?" I ask myself. "Why would you leave me out??". But in all seriousness, this is very very nifty. Would be great to use this to plan meetups too :). Thanks!! Bookmarked.
- octohunt 10y agoThanks for your feedback, nstart! Good to hear that you find it useful and I'm sorry to hear that your profile isn't showing up. Unfortunately, I don't know exactly how GitHub associates programming languages with GitHub profiles and how their API sorts the results. Since I released octohunt without a particular use case in mind, I'm always interested in hearing what people might use it for. Planning meetups is certainly a great one :)
- davidsawyer 10y agoHow was your experience using firebase to build the app?
- octohunt 10y agoI decided to use firebase because I didn't want to set up a backend simply for authentication (everything else in octohunt is client side). Setting it up was super easy and I coudn't recommend them more for projects like this.
- cdnsteve 10y agoAny tips for getting listed or why my own profile might not be coming up?
- octohunt 10y agoGitHub uses linguist (https://github.com/github/linguist https://github.com/github/linguist) to determine the languages associated with your profile. I'm not sure though under what circumstances a language actually becomes part of your profile data. I can only assume that it has something to do with the total amount of code in a certain language and the ratio between programming languages in your account. So unfortunately, there isn't really much you can do to get your profile to show up (except maybe to publish more code on GitHub).
- morpheyesh 10y agoHow does this work? you look at the total commits a person has done in a particular language?
- octohunt 10y agoActually, the GitHub API has this feature built-in. They use linguist (https://github.com/github/linguist https://github.com/github/linguist) to detect the languages of the repositories in your profile and then, through some magic (I couldn't find any documentation on this), associate them with your profile.
