Database of 9.3M Healthcare Patient Records Breached
- specialist 10y agoWorked in healthcare IT. Breaches are inevitable. Not "if", but "when". The attack surface area is huge. My team created 5 regional healthcare exchanges. Hospitals, insurers, scripts, labs, etc. So many weak links in the chain. So you'd think "encrypt" the data (ala translucent database designs). But you can't. Because we don't have unique identifiers for all persons, demographics must be stored in plaintext, so that medicals records can be matched across heterogenous systems.

Once again Bitcoin is the "getaway car" of choice for hackers and ransomware extortionists around the world.* Where are all the Bitcoin fans when this happens? Probably reassuring themselves with, "Untraceability isn't a horrific crime-facilitating flaw; it's a feature." At least good old currency bills had serial numbers on them... * Just a few other examples: https://it.slashdot.org/story/16/04/26/1357238/businesses-pay-100000-to-ddos-extortionists-who-never-ddos-anyone https://it.slashdot.org/story/16/04/26/1357238/businesses-pa... https://yro.slashdot.org/story/16/06/13/2211221/new-device-sold-on-the-dark-web-can-clone-up-to-15-contactless-cards-per-second https://yro.slashdot.org/story/16/06/13/2211221/new-device-s... https://news.slashdot.org/story/16/06/12/082234/ransomware-thieves-cost-canada-university-c20000-in-bitcoin https://news.slashdot.org/story/16/06/12/082234/ransomware-t...
