Also excellent is 1975's proto-cyberpunk novel "The Shockwave Rider" by John Brunner, which was directly influenced by "Future Shock."

- mindcrime 10y agoI'd like to second that recommendation. The Shockwave Rider is a great book. I definitely recommend it for any of the HN crowd who haven't read it yet. I only just read it about two years ago, and I really wish I'd read it sooner. It's not exactly "cyberpunk" but you can kinda see the influence it had on subsequent cyberpunk authors.
- yborg 10y agoThirding. At least 15 years ahead of its time, and there's still some bits I'm waiting for. The concept of "Hearing Aid" as a distributed universal ombudsman is something we have parts of, maybe, in things like Wikileaks and the Tor network, but the idea of implementing them as essentially a self-replicating worm that runs on hundreds of millions of machines still hasn't been attempted to my knowledge.
