Hidden in the article is an example how moralizing destroys soul:
> Abortion has been illegal in Poland for some time, but the governing party wants to tighten restrictions on abortion by investigating every miscarriage as a potential crime.
One day, you are "pro life", and the next day, you are happy to harrass people in terrible life situation.
- danharaj 10y agoThe way I interpret these contradictions is that words in ideology are largely instrumental. They achieve a goal that is seldom stated explicitly. That's how yu get aporia like pro-life bombings of abortion clinics and people promulgating family values that refuse to recognize certain families.
- guard-of-terra 10y agoMy point is that they pay with their soul (or you can call it "integrity"), up front, and then maybe achieve a questionable goal.
- droopyEyelids 10y agoPossibly. An alternative explanation is that the stated goal (reducing abortion) wasn't the actual goal. For example, if controlling/subjugating women was the actual goal, then more actions taken in the context of 'pro-life' activism makes sense.
- ArkyBeagle 10y agoIt's hard to disentangle subconscious and conscious goals, but the goal of proscriptions against adultery and other reproductive mores usually have a foundation in primogeniture - the practice of passing land and property on to the eldest son. Robin Hanson has his "Farmer v. Forager" framework to classify many things about which people disagree with respect to social ... policy. I don't think anyone who isn't a bit ... off can openly promote subjugating women for its own sake; so it's a better story at least if there's a more rational explanation.
- guard-of-terra 10y ago"if controlling/subjugating women was the actual goal" Then to begin with they had no soul.
- TeMPOraL 10y agoThe only real "goal" here was media getting more ad revenue. Maciej is just repeating the most recent wave of bullshit stories that circled the Polish press few weeks ago. Honestly, I expected more from him.
- hnal943 10y agoYou're really going to accept this version at face value? Seems like a hyperbolic description to me.
- TeMPOraL 10y agoIt's utter bullshit, though it did make some circles in the Polish media for a while. Basically, a lot of people hate the political party that won the recent elections, and so journalists invent all kind of nonsense because it sells papers. A standard rule of thumb applies - if you read something on the news that sounds too ridiculous to be true, it's most likely because it's not true.
