I appreciate how paying for donors (even in the form of a charitable donation) can be seen as a slippery slope, but I really only see two options - 1) Allow payment, or 2) Automatic Opt-in system for everyone to be a donor. Since the second is perhaps less politically palatable, and (as the article notes) in the US there are already precedents for blood and sperm, I wish this legal action every success.
