I am not sure that I understand your use of the term "welfare state". My dictionary says:
> a system whereby the government undertakes to protect the health and well-being of its citizens, especially those in financial or social need, by means of grants, pensions, and other benefits.
The above is standard in all of the northern-European countries typically lauded for their economic success. Clearly, this was not what caused the collapse of the Greek economy. Of course, there are many alternative theories, but the most convincing one I am aware of is that it was the result of subprime lending by north-European (predominantly German) banks.
- AnthonyMouse 10y agoYour dictionary contains the Blue Team definition. The Red Team definition is a state that discourages work by providing welfare benefits to people who don't work (or don't work as much) but denies the same benefits to people who do work. That has not been going particularly well for France or Spain either.
- marincounty 10y agoI've been hearing this Red Team definition forever. Where are these jobs that go unfilled? Where are these groups of people who are living the welfare life? Now if you mean working several jobs, and still living out of your car--you won. I've noticed, even in the US, Republicans have backed off claiming that people on welfare are just lazy people who don't want your Red Team job. Why? Because their isn't any livable job magically awaiting them. Trump knows this. That's why he's blaming trade agreements, and illegial immigrants. I haven't once heard him play the lazy card/they have it too good card. It might be the only card he hasen't played? (Yes, I know the discussion is about Greece. I just doubt there's a bunch of jobs, anywhere, that go unfilled because the state welfare benefits are so generous. And yes, there will be that one person who scours the internet and finds the one livable wage job posting--you won.)
