One more thing: the UK was the official reason English is one of the languages of the EU (same as, on paper at least, with all the other languages). It will require some more fiddling to keep it so.
- gonvaled 10y agoInteresting angle. Ireland? EDIT I think that even without the UK (and Ireland), the EU would still use English as official language. For better or worse, English is a useful method of communication, even between lets say Spanish and Polish people.
- guitarbill 10y agoI don't think that's true. What else would they use? English as a lingua franca is as practical as it is political (i.e. Germany and France both sort of saving face).
- nicky0 10y agoI'm sure the Irish will have something to say about it.
- Strom 10y agoLuckily English is the official language in other EU countries as well. Ireland & Malta. [1] [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_the_European_Union#Official_EU_languages https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_the_European_Unio...
- gejjaxxita 10y agoEnglish is an official language of those countries.
- igravious 10y agoIrish Republic. 5 million people. Once UK finally leaves the EU Ireland will be the largest state in the EU where the majority language is English. To help you find it :) Ireland is located in 26 out of 32 of the counties in that island to the west of Great Britain. ;-)
- mkaziz 10y agoSome folks say it should be 32 out of 32.
