"It seems to me that overarching theories of a Platonic bent miss the embodied-ness, Dasein-ness of human activity."
What a spectacularly obtuse and improbable sentence! Its mere existence underlines its point. Nice.
- thanatropism 10y agoIn my defense, It was late into the single hours and I couldn't sleep nor think right. Maybe "embeddedness" is the better word. The symbol system that is language is never the whole story of communication with language; we hardly code expression that's verbal but nonlexical (tone of voice, prosody, etc.); nor we're able to incorporate the layers upon layers of material mediation (reproduction and transmission technologies, air, light) into our generative account of linguistic phenomena. Which is maybe another way of putting that what you say isn't what you mean - it's what's out there. Maybe it's still a stupid point, but I thought it was worth trying to restate it once more.
