I disagree on both parts.
Downvoting without explaining only stifles communication and smugly reinforces both sides' viewpoints. A downvote IMO should only be used if the comment is brazenly off-topic, offensive, or factually incorrect.
As for the second part, someone could be a true angel but never witness any harassment and never have the chance to bring an offender to justice - does that make them a better or worse person than someone who had?
I think the parent's point was that if people just got along and didn't cause these kinds of problems we wouldn't have to suddenly shunt souls into categories: "offender";"victim";"witness";"white knight";"silently complicit"
And so on.
- mcguire 10y agoDoesn't that depend on what you mean by "just got along" and "didn't cause these kinds of problems"? Don't rock the boat? Don't be a narc or a buzzkill? Get a sense of humor?
- rm_-rf_slash 10y agoMaybe if people went to work to work and not sexually harass other people we would all be in a better place. I did not say at all that one should stay silent in the face of adversity.
- mcguire 10y agoAnd if pigs could fly, we'd all have instantaneous bacon delivery. Counterfactuals are fun.
- rm_-rf_slash 10y agoSlavery was commonly accepted around the world for thousands of years. These days, the idea that you could buy or sell human beings is considered broadly repulsive. Social norms can change.
- pc86 10y agoYou can disagree about the downvoting but it's part of the community standards.
- rm_-rf_slash 10y agoTrue, and the standards are reasonable. However I choose to regard downvoting in the manner described above as a matter of Internet courtesy.
