Care to explain what you mean?
- contingencies 10y agoThe probable application of more efficient and accurate speech recognition is mass surveillance.
- cm3 10y agoThis is beyond the scope of the tech linked here, but I'll bite and respond. I agree with what you say, but why is this worse than Google, Amazon and Microsoft doing it for the rest of the world with their always-on voice activated bots? I wouldn't be able to trust either Baidu or one the those three companies more/less, maybe just based on where I live and who would have the most influence on my life when considering government ties. Other than that, if everybody does it, there's the nice effect that it's not an exclusive tool in the hands of just one or two players and it creates a market correcting and balancing force. Would I want mass surveillance to go away? Sure, but the majority seems to want things like voice activated devices, so I have a hard time imagining anything short of some disastrous scandal being able to fix the erosion of privacy and freedom to think and say stuff we wouldn't publish under our name in a book. That said, I feel the pressure to self-censor due to surveillance and that leaves me with discomfort and kinda being restrained by it. Honestly, some of these technological innovations having lead to pervasive surveillance appear like going back in time in terms of personal space.
