From Steve Job's Commencement Speech at Stanford, and on taking a class in Calligraphy:
"None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me, and we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts, and since Windows just copied the Mac, it's likely that no personal computer would have them."
- houseabsolute 17y agoIt seems unlikely that except for Steve's brilliance no one would have come up with the idea that proportional typefaces might be nice on computers. They were alive and well elsewhere; it was only a matter of time before they made it into our thinking machines.
- Luyt 17y agoI think it was also Steve Jobs who said: "PC screens look typewritten. Mac screens look typeset."
- george_morgan 17y agoAlthough proportionally spaced electronic typewriters were fairly common place before the Mac. A little myth making by Mr Jobs I think.
