Have you considered becomming a creditor? You can lend via sites like lendingclub.com. Annual returns are approaching what you'd expect to get on the stock market in the long term. I haven't tried this investment myself yet (insufficient funds) but I'd be interested if I had the money spare. Warning: I'm not sure about how this works in the US, but here in the UK I'd have to obtain a consumer credit act license for lending more than 25k.
