On the question of “why is there no moderate alternative to the NRA that attracts middle-of-the-road gun owners?”, what a lot of people who aren't involved in the community don't understand is that the NRA is the moderate alternative group. The more extremist groups include Gun Owners of America (https://gunowners.org/ https://gunowners.org/), Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership (http://jpfo.org/ http://jpfo.org/), National Association for Gun Rights (https://www.nationalgunrights.org/ https://www.nationalgunrights.org/), and Citizen's Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (http://www.ccrkba.org/ http://www.ccrkba.org/), among many others at the national and state level. Last I checked, all of these smaller gun rights groups still have bigger membership rolls than the biggest anti-rights groups.
